IncSmart Georgia (Small Business and Startups) - Vogtle nuclear power plant expansion in Georgia is receiving some resistance. Called the best economic choice for customers who can benefit form a carbon free source of energy. Georgia Power, one of the co owners of Vogtle, has received a total of $3.68 billion in payments from Toshiba. Toshiba is the parent company of Westinghouse, a major contractor in the expansion. Toshiba also announced a conditional commitment of $1.7 billion in additional loan guarantees from the US Department of Energy (DOE).
Vogtle's expansion employs over 6000 construction workers. Payment made by Toshiba will protect the Georgia electric customers by reducing the total cost of the plant. Vogtle has had budget busting delays. The total project costs have doubled and the completion time pushed to 2022 since the plant expansion was first approved.
