Individual Taxpayer Identification Number - ITIN
The ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the IRS. The ITIN is for non resident and resident aliens, their spouses and dependents. The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have an tax payer number, but who can not get a Social Security Number (SSN). This will help people comply with US tax laws, and supply a means for completing tax returns. They are issued regardless of immigration status, because both resident and non resident aliens have responsibilities to the IRS. ITINs do not perform any other purpose other than tax reporting.
You need an ITIN for
- Non Resident Alien who is required to file US taxes
- US Resident Alien filing tax return
- Dependent or Spouse of US citizen or Resident Alien
- Dependent or Spouse of Non Resident Alien visa holder
- Non Resident Alien claiming a tax treaty benefit
- Non Resident Alien student, professor or researcher, filing taxes or claiming exemption
The ITIN does not
- Authorize work in the US
- Provide eligibility for Social Security Benefits
- Qualify a dependent for Earned Income Tax Credit purposes

Alert:
You May Need to Renew Your ITIN. All ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three years will no longer be valid for use on a tax return as of Jan. 1, 2017. Additionally, all ITINs issued before 2013 will begin expiring this year, starting with those with middle digits of 78 and 79 (Example: (9XX-78-XXXX). All expired ITINs must be renewed before being used on a U.S. tax return. No action is needed by ITIN holders who don’t need to file a tax return next year. Also, there are new documentation requirements when applying for or renewing an ITIN for certain dependents. Find more information in the ITIN Expiration Frequently Asked Questions.
