IncSmart Michigan (Small Business and Startups) - Politicians in Michigan's capital city Lansing, voted unanimously last week, to join other cities in American and call itself a sanctuary city. The word "Sanctuary City" has no legal definition. It does however tell federal and state lawmakers that it will instruct local law authorities to hamper and ignore cooperation with the U.S. immigration officials. Local business owners stepped up against the Lansing city council. They decried this vote fearing a an outcry unwanted attention from the Trump administration and the loss of federal funding.
Business owners won. The Lansing city council rescinded this decision. The new Texas law cracking down on sanctuary cities could inspire other states to take a similar approach. Law enforcement are going to be required to comply with ICE detainer requests. Texas is the first state to ban sanctuary cities. Colorado passed the law in 2006, but the measure was repealed seven years later. Only Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee have officially passed laws banning sanctuary policies.
