DEFINITION
FUTA or Federal Unemployment Tax Act a federal tax on employers to help finance state workforce agencies called as unemployment offices. FUTA is a tax paid entirely by the employer and not withheld from the employee’s pay. All employers are subject to the tax if they have at least one employee. The amount that the employer pays is based on the amount paid to the employee. Employers file Form 940 to the IRS along with the payment each year on Jan. 31. In some cases, employers can pay monthly installments for the FUTA tax.
