A commodity is a raw material that can be bought and sold. Commodities are agriculture, livestock, energy and metals. The Chicago Board of Trade/Mercantile Exchange is the oldest commodity exchange for futures and options. Cash commodities called actuals are physical goods like wheat or oil. Derivatives are contracts for managing prices of commodities.
