The discovery means the Mancos Shale, named after Mancos Colorado, could become one of America's top shale producing area The Mancos Shale is part of the San Juan Basin. the basin stretches from New Mexico and Colorado. British Petroleum purchased 33,000 acres from Devon Energy. British Petroleum plans to open a new office for the unit in Denver.
The gas discovery is found in San Juan and Rio Arriba counties. British Petroleum believes says it is a new source of shale gas in New Mexico. British Petroleum has owned the land for two years. San Juan County is part of the Four Corners are where it meets Arizona, Utah and Colorado. Rio Arriba County is directly west of San Juan County. The current unemployment rate for Rio Arriba County and San Juan County is between 8% and 7.0%.
