Oregon to Tax Bikers
IncSmart Oregon (Small Business and Startups) - Oregonians love to ride bikes.  Portland boasts that 7.2 percent of the city's commuters ride bicycles.  The highest percentage of bike commuters for an American city of this size. Oregon legislators passed a massive transportation package that includes a tax on the sale of bicycles.  Beginning next year, the retail price of a bicycle over $200 will be taxed an extra $15. This tax will fund improvements for bicycle and pedestrian projects.

Retailers will start collecting these new taxes January 1, 2018.  Oregon is now the only state in America with a bicycle excise tax.  Smaller retailers are hit the hardest.  Big box retailers such as Walmart, are exempt from collecting these taxes.  The law unfairly puts the burden of this tax on small business.  The bike tax goal to is raise $1.2 million per year from the healthy.  Oregon has no sales tax.  However, at the same time, $2,500 rebate for the purchase of a new electric vehicle.
