IncSmart New York (Small Business and Startups) - Don't make costly mistakes when starting your new business.  If you plan on conducting  a business through a sole proprietorship or general partnership under any name other than your own, you are required by law to file a Business Certificate.  This certificate is also called a Certificate of Assumed Name.  You must file in the office of the County Clerk in the county your business is located.  The name of the form is Business Certificate Form, also known as a Certificate of Assumed Name in New York City. 

Legal advice is no longer out of reach for startups.  New owners can stay as sole ownership of the business but without a corporate structure  However, this could owners small business open to personal liability. The filling fees for sole proprietors and general partnerships, depends on the county in which you are opeing the new business. In New York City, the fees are as follows:

Bronx $100
Brooklyn (Kings County) $120
Manhattan (New York County) $100
Staten Island (Richmond County) $120
Queens $100
