The investment is to reach 1 billion dollars. The company is expected to hire an additional 600 people. The population of Tuscaloosa is just under 100,000 residents. This will be a huge impact on the city. Construction is expected to start next year, and production from the new plant will begin around 2020.
The Tuscaloosa manufacturing plant will be making SUVs for the EQ electric cars. The plant is also celebrating the 20th anniversary in Alabama. The new building will be a one million square foot battery plant near the auto factory. This will make Mercedes Benz's fifth battery plant globally. Unemployment rate in Tuscaloosa was 4.7 % in April 2017.
