IncSmart Washington DC (Small Business and Startups) - The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved an amendment to protect a state's medical marijuana program from federal government interference. This amendment is introduced despite a written request from Attorney General Sessions that wants to crack down on marijuana use. In May, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent a letter to Congress asking them not to extend the protections.
The appropriations bill for 2018 prevents the Department of Justice from using funds to prevent any State or jurisdiction from implementing a law that authorizes the use, distribution, possession, or cultivation of medical marijuana. Twenty nine states, the District of Columbia, and territories Puerto Rico and Guam have passed laws legalizing various forms of medical marijuana. Trey Gowdy, the new chairman of the House Oversight Committee says the he does understand why marijuana is classified by the federal government, as a Schedule One narcotic, when cocaine, methamphetamine and heroine are classified Schedule Two. The Justice Department is using a 50 year old law that has never been updated.
