IncSmart Maryland (Small Business and Startups) - Emergent BioSolutions Expanding vaccine plant in East Baltimore. This partnership with the federal government is spending $80 million to double the size of the East Lombard Street plant. This plant is near the John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. This expansion ensures Emergent the ability to take on larger contracts when the US Government has an increase in vaccine manufacturing. It also provides from for the development and marketing on new commercial drugs.
Baltimore economic growth could be significant with this expansion. The new 112,000 square facility will add about 100 workers. The company currently has 500 employees in Maryland. Emergent made a commitment to Baltimore to hire locally and work with the cities schools to teach students about manufacturing the science of pharmaceuticals. But Baltimore still suffers from horrific conditions for it's citizens. The mayor is asking the federal government for help. Violence in Baltimore has reached a crisis. The number of killings topped a 20-year high in the early part of 2017. Gangs are controlling the streets of the city.
