IncSmart Louisiana (Small Business and Startups) - Shandong Yuhuang Chemical Co. of China, has purchased 1,300 Mississippi riverfront acres in St. James Parish for a $1.85 billion methanol manufacturing plant. St. James will produce 1.7 million tons of methanol per year. Most of the methanol will be shipped to China. Methanol is used in most insulation foam for refrigerators and freezers.
Louisiana offers economic and tax incentives of $4.3 million. This investment will bring 1000 indirect jobs in St. James Parish. St. James Parish is located west of New Orleans. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,102. St. James current unemployment rate is 6.9%. The parish seat is St James is Convent. The residents of this majority black community has long history of poverty and unemployment.
