High-purity aluminum is used for a number of defense purposes, including in military planes and in the armor-plating of military vehicles. This high-purity aluminum is used in the F-35. China is the world’s biggest producer of the Aluminum. America has a standing trade complaint with the World Trade Organization alleging dumping.
Century Aluminum has the only plant to smelt this high grade metal. They have been concerned about having to shut down this smelter in Hawesville, Kentucky. Ross said the U.S. currently only has one company that can mass produce aluminum for the aerospace-quality aluminum. Trump has assured the CEO of Century Aluminum that the administration will bring back jobs for workers the company recently had to lay off.
