IncSmart Louisiana (Small Business and Startups) - BASF second phase of Louisiana expansion as the largest chemical plant in North America continues. This expansion will cost BASF $87 million dollars. The company has already committed $150d million dollars to phase 1 of the expansion in the 2000 acre project in Ascension Parish, BASF and the city of Geismar have a 30 year history. Geismar is in the heart of Louisiana's chemical corridor.
The expansion will allow BASF to double it's production of MDI, which is used to create polyurethanes. This next phase will create 170 construction jobs in Geismar. Construction is expected to start at the end of 2019 and scheduled to end by 2021. Louisiana's unemployment rate is at 4.7%, slightly higher than the national average. Over 3000 people live in Geismar and over 75,000 is Ascension Parish.
