IncSmart Michigan (Small Business and Startups) - Amazon is building a new warehouse and fulfillment center in Michigan. The new regional center is under construction in Livonia. The $90 million center is expected to open this fall. The goal is to be ready by the holiday season. The center is more than 1 million square feet, with 96 truck docks. If Amazon hires 350 new employees by December 31, the company will receive a $2.6 million performance grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund. The grant grows to $7.5 million if 1,000 employees are hired by the end of 2020.
The Amazon investment will create 1,000 full-time jobs on the former site of General Motors Spring and Bumper Plant. More businesses will follow to the industrial park near Interstate 96 and I-275. In addition to the 1,000 hourly jobs, 100 additional employees will be hired for managerial, support and human resources. The population in Livonia is just less than 97,000 and is part of metropolitan Detroit, located 15 miles northwest of downtown. The unemployment rate in Livonia is 3.00%.
